LYRA

I offered to take everyone to Oxford using my Beaming powers, transporting through the moon’s beam, but judging by what Royal’s friend told him about the tests and traps, it seemed a better idea to save up my magic. So Jack, Gray, Royal, Luc, and I piled into our shitty car and hit the motorway. Nico stayed behind to interrogate the witch, and I’d put Hazel in charge of guarding Cas, making sure the healers didn’t decide to unfreeze him and let him die. As for Emily, I hoped I’d return to find her cheery face more appropriately sombre.

“You’re sure you’ve never heard of this elixir?” I shouted into the phone, the groaning of the rusty car deafening. I had to press a finger to my left ear to hear Harry’s reply.

“No, love. Nothing like that. Magic, obviously, but there were never any elixirs mentioned in the castle. I do remember rumours of catacombs under the castle-city, but I never saw them.”

“Catacombs?”

Catacombs that, technically, didn’t exist.

The trouble was the entire castle-city of Oxford didn’t exist to most people. A heavy, seriously powerful shielding spell hid the whole thing from mortal eyes. A secret Oxford, right on the edge of the city everyone knew.

If I hadn’t been so terrified to lose Cas, it might have excited me to learn more about this secret city, to explore it. But I just wanted to get in there, get the elixir, and get the hell out.

“We’ll look for underground entrances, then. Thanks, Harry,” I said, impatient to look at the sketch of the map, urgency a panicked bird flapping its wings in my chest. “Anything else?”

“Not that I can think of. Just be careful, Lyra. The catacombs are dangerous if they’re real. People used to say if you went in, you didn’t come out again.”

Perfect.

“I don’t have a choice, Harry,” I said, suddenly tired. “See you later.” I ended the call before he could reply and tipped my head back against the worn seat, my eyes sliding shut against the scenery passing us.

A hand settled on my shoulder, squeezing tight, and through the bond between me and Jack, I felt his worry. “I’m fine,” I murmured, even as my tethers to the others surged with concern and warmth. Royal’s especially pressed comforting heat and reassurance into my body, as if he felt everything ten times more than anyone else, and not just because of the newness of our mating bond. I wanted to ask how the hell he’d convinced me he was a cold, hard bastard when he felt so much, but now wasn’t the time.

“I’m just tired,” I insisted, peeling my eyes open to look at Gray in the driver’s seat beside me. “I’ll feel better when we have this damn elixir.”

Every time I said that word, I felt like Merlin would pop up in front of the car in a poof of purple smoke. Fucking elixir. In my world, shit like that didn’t exist, let alone hold the only hope of saving my mate and alpha.
